Thank You for your Extraordinary Support

Lynn,BarnOwl&Michele-1web

Your generosity is saving the day. You helped raise an additional $4,000 this week. The baby barn owl count has reached 400, but mouse consumption is slowly decreasing from its high of 1,500 per day. Thank you so much for helping us get through this challenging time.

Banding Lesson

Jim Anderson, naturalist from Sisters, OR, visited this week and gave us a banding lesson.

We were closely supervised by future scientist, 5-year old Destiny.

Thank you Jim for sharing your expertise and the photos!

More Babies…

Three Long-eared Owls were admitted this past week. The first came from Moses Lake, WA. It did not need to be rescued (it was kidnapped!), but there was no record of who brought it to the hospital hospital in Moses Lake.

Number two and number three came from Sunnyside, WA. Their nest blew out of its tree. A third sibling was killed. All three owlets were uninjured and have been fostered into other long-eared owl nests.

Three American Kestrels were found on the ground near a warehouse.  They will go into a hack box at the Tri-Cities center as soon as they can eat whole mice. Kestrels are cavity nesters. They keep the floor of the nest fairly clean, but the walls quickly become covered in whitewash. How do they do that!

Four nestling Red-tailed Hawks from three nests that were blown from trees also arrived this past week. Three of the young hawks suffered hip injuries, but the prognosis is good for them to recover.

How Do You Weigh A Bald Eagle? Very Carefully!

We have been taking monthly blood samples of the young Bald Eagle admitted in January with an incredibly high blood lead level. We had not weighed her since moving her to the large flight pen. Since we had to catch her to draw blood, it seemed like a good time to weigh her. She weighs a healthy 10 pounds.

Its Time For Spring Cleaning

Join us for a  (Work) Party on Saturday, May 19 from 10 am - 12 pm. Bring a pitch fork or a weed eater and we’ll burn tumble weeds and trim where the mower can’t go. Thank you in advance for our help!
