Baby Season is in Full Swing

Eight species of babies have been admitted to BMW’s Pendleton and Tri-Cities centers in the last two weeks. Michele is now raising 17 Barn Owls at the hack site. Owl #2, that we have been watching, can now swallow whole mice and will be moved outside to a nest box with several other similar sized Barn Owls in the coming week.

As Big as the Apple!

Barn Owlet #2 continues to grow like crazy. At 15 days old, he’s as tall as the apple and his eyes are open. 


More nestling Great Horned Owls

Five more nestling Great Horned Owls were admitted this past week. One had multiple injuries, but the prognosis for a full recovery is good.

Growing Like A Bird

Barn Owlet #2 is growing like a weed. In the first photo the owlet is 1 day old. In the second photo it is 8 days old.

Baby Season Has Officially Started

The first baby Barn Owls of the season hatched from eggs transported in a load of hay. Four of the eggs were intact after the hay was unloaded. Two of them hatched, the first on April 1, the second four days later. Below is baby #1 at three days of age.

Its been nice having another quiet week after the crazy winter that just ended. We welcomed new intern Caroline who will be at the center for the next eight weeks. She joins Becca who works most weekends while attending Whitman College during the week. …
