Hermiston Outdoor School

Hunting with lead

Each of Hermiston’s five grade schools send their fifth graders to outdoor school. BMW’s education team participates in all five of the events. The education birds are always a highlight for students. This year the students are also playing a game that demonstrates how lead can affect both humans and wildlife, and how easy it is to reduce lead exposure in wildlife and people by using non-lead ammunition. We will attend the last two outdoor schools in the coming week.

Heritage Days at Sacajawea Park in Pasco

Another annual event for BMW's education team is Heritage Days. The two-day event is open to school groups on Friday and the general public on Saturday. Ten groups stopped by to learn about raptors on Friday. It was a lot quieter on Saturday.

Sharp-shinned Hawk 18-645 Release

Sharpie release

This female Sharpie chased a Robin into a window. The Robin didn’t survive the window strike. Fortunately the hawk was just stunned. After an overnight rest at BMW, she was ready to go. Megan released her in a park near where she was found. She quickly landed high up in a tree. Hopefully she has learned to avoid that window!
