Thank You to the Clara & Art Bald Trust

We received notice this week of a $2,000 grant from the Clara & Art Bald Trust to help with the purchase of a new bank of stainless steel cages for the clinic. The new cages will eliminate (except for the busiest time in the summer) the use of plastic dog crates as hospital caging and make more efficient use of our small space. Thank you Bald Trust!

Sharp-shinned Hawk 18-686 Update

Sharpie release

After a few days of the All you Can Eat Buffet, the Sharp-shinned Hawk trapped at Smith Frozen Foods warehouse was banded and released at McKay Wildlife Refuge. She was very eager to be on her way.

Merlin 18-690

Merl necropsy

Business really has slowed down, but there still seem to be plenty of broken bodies to try and mend. We were not successful with this little Merlin 18-690. He had been shot, with the projectile passing through his sternum. He died in less than 24 hours from admission. We did not realize the extent of his injuries until doing a necropsy. There was extensive damage to both the sternum and muscle tissue.

Great Horned Owl 18-693

GHOW 18-693

Volunteer Marla captured Great Horned Owl 18-693 along a Pasco freeway with traffic zipping by at 70 miles an hour. The young owl had obviously figured out how to catch prey. She weighed 1560 grams - 1200 is a normal weight for a female. Unfortunately, she had not learned to avoid vehicles. An exam found both a broken wing and a broken leg. Radiographs also showed that the owl had been shot some time earlier. Can you find all three pellets?

Red-tailed Hawk 18-694

RTHA 18-694

A man reported seeing a hawk walking around his yard in Pasco. Marla again came to the rescue. Sadly, it turned out to be another gunshot victim.
