The Week in Review

We are about halfway through baby season. Admissions at the Pendleton center are up only slightly from last year. Barn Owl numbers are down at the Tri-Cities center at 75. I’m wondering if that is due, at least in part, to the challenges of shipping hay during a pandemic?

Bald Eagle 21-292

An adult Bald Eagle was found on the ground, unable to fly, near Ellensburg, WA. It was thought to have been struck by a vehicle. The finder transported the eagle to Ellensburg Animal Hospital. It was then transferred to BMW for care. Our exam found a dislocated left shoulder and some lacerations, but no broken bones. Below, intern Tina is helping anesthetize the eagle before the exam. The eagle is still fairly calm after his ordeal, but has a good appetite. We are hopeful he will make a complete recovery.

Great Horned Owl 21-183 Reunited with his Family

Three weeks ago a young Great Horned Owl was admitted having been electrocuted, likely on his first flight from the nest. Fortunately his recovery went well and volunteer Bill was able to reunite the owl with his family - the parents and two siblings were still in the same grove of trees. The land owner had contacted the power company who retrofitted the power poles so no more birds will be injured.
