June 10 - June 16

Its Hot

Summer won't officially be here for a few more days, but it's already hot. We have the over-head sprinklers hooked up to cool off the outside birds. These two young eagles, a bald on the left and a golden on the right, are contemplating a dip in their bath pan.

Red-Tailed Hawks 19-200, 19-201 & 19-202

Three young hawks ended up on the ground near Othello, WA when their nest was blown out of a tree the first week of June. Distance and logistics made it impossible to re-nest the birds in an artificial nest. Two of the hawks were in excellent condition and are currently in a hack box at the Pendleton Center, soon to be released.

The third hawk was in poor condition at admission. His condition continued to deteriorate over the course of a week. The decision was made to euthanize him when it became clear treatment would not be successful. Many fungal lesions, a condition called aspergillosis, were found throughout the hawk’s body cavity and air sacs during a necropsy. We had been treating the hawk with an anti fungal medication, but the disease was too advanced to control.
