 The New Cages Have Arrived

The cages arrived on Tuesday.

New cages arrive

We assembled them on Wednesday and Thursday, and four were occupied by Sunday. Thank you to the Autzen Foundation, the Clara and Art Bald Trust and Jack and Sharon Simons for making this new acquisition possible. George Murdock donated his signs following a successful County Commissioner re-election campaign. The signs make excellent door liners. Thank you George!

Bald Eagle 19-016

Rehab Slides.001

The second Bald Eagle of 2019 has a toxic level of lead, 52.9 micrograms/deciliter and was likely hit by a car. She is a large female who was found by a snow plow driver near Yakima. The first course of chelation has been completed, but she is still unable to use her legs. We are continuing supportive care in hopes that her injuries will heal.

Red-tailed Hawk 19-017

Witnesses saw this young hawk being shot near Halfway, OR. They reported the incident to authorities and then were directed to Blue Mountain Wildlife. An exam and radiographs revealed three pellets in the hawk, a fracture of the left  ulna (the pellet passed through the wing) and an injured eye. It appears that a pellet entered the hawk’s right eye and exited through the eyebrow. There is also damage in the hawk’s left wrist. It is too soon to know if he will be releasable. Hopefully there will be consequences for those who shot the hawk.

Barn Owl 19-019

The first Barn Owl with a brood patch was admitted this week. The patch was fairly small, perhaps indicating the owl was still laying eggs and none of them had yet hatched. She also has a fractured right scapula.

Call for a Volunteer Coordinator!

BMW is hoping to ramp up its volunteer efforts, but to do so, we need a volunteer coordinator! If you or someone you know might be able and willing to coordinate the BMW volunteers (as a volunteer), please send us an email at lynn@bluemountainwildlife.org. It will require organizational skills, people skills, and some free time. Thank you in advance!!!
